“Ergonomic” Isn’t Enough: Find the Carrier That Fits

Updated: Jan 25

The term “ergonomic” suggests a product designed to fit, offering efficiency and comfort. But when it comes to baby carriers, what does “ergonomic” on the label really guarantee?

Not much.

Most structured carriers are far from universal. There’s a good chance an “ergonomic” carrier may not fit you. In babywearing, this label often points to a carrier with a slightly wider seat—but a wide seat doesn’t necessarily mean a hip-healthy position or optimal comfort for your baby.

So, what should you do? Ignore the label and test your carrier in real life.

In babywearing terminology, the term “ergonomic” might indicate a carrier with a seat wider than super narrow. Unfortunately, the width of the seat does not equal a hip-healthy position or your baby’s comfort either. The term “ergonomic” suggests a product designed to fit, offering efficiency and comfort. Safety First

Put the carrier on, place your baby inside facing in, and check: Does the top of the carrier reach your baby’s earlobes? Is your baby high and close, not hanging low, slumping, or at risk of falling out if you bend over? Are you comfortable?

Check Your Baby’s Comfort

Look for a hip-healthy position. Use a mirror to check the seat’s shape. Does it create a "smile" from knee to knee? If yes, you’ve found a safe, hip-healthy carrier!

When It’s Not a Match

If your carrier isn’t ergonomic for you, don’t give up. Explore your options:

Research other carriers. Try on different styles. Book a session with a babywearing consultant. Visit a shop or a sling library near you. Finding the right fit takes effort, but it’s worth it—for both you and your baby.

Carry on! ❤️

Yours,

Michaela
